Independence Day for Nutmeg
Meet Nutmeg. Kiki found her by a neighborhood fence just sitting there quietly. We determined she was old enough to be out of the nest and weaned. We were afraid the skilled hunting cats in the area would make her a snack so we took her home for a few days.
.
This is her just one week later. She was getting more and more wild and we knew she should be released back into a safe habitat. As safe as a rabbit can be, anyway. And what, if you could make up a scenario, would you say is the safest, natural habitat for a wild rabbit? Wouldn't you say a Wildlife Refuge? And then because it was an imaginary place, wouldn't you say it should be an island? And for good measure, wouldn't you add that it should be run by nuns or something like that?
.
Near our house, there is a wildlife refuge on an island run by nuns. So off we went, with little Nutmeg in a carrying case.
.
Hmmm, where do you think Kiki is carrying Nutmeg, now?
.
It was the place she felt most secure. Plus, we didn't want the nuns to think we were taking wildlife out with a carrying case. Although I was tempted to nab this next one....
.
The doorman let us in. He was no bigger than a quarter. And a little lethargic for a doorman if you ask me.
.
And here is the dramatic moment we'd been waiting for. The release of Nutmeg back into the wild.
It's kind of anti-climactic. Our human-ness wants to see some last symbol of thanks or recognition. But that poor little bunny only had one thing on it's mind-- to FLEE.
Which is the way God made it, so, GO, Nutmeg, GO!
